Cedar Top – Kilgore’s Colored Community
Cedar Top is a historically segregated colored community that was the city center for African Americans in Kilgore, TX. The Cedar Top is located a few blocks north of downtown Kilgore on South Street (now MLK) and the intersection of Wells Street and Bates Street. Cedat Top came into existance and grew between the end of the Civil War and the beginning of the great Kilgore oil boom in the 1930’s. Cedar Top was a popular business center for Blacks and consisted of general stores, private businesses, entertainment, homes, and the area school, Kilgore Colored School.
